Gorizia is configured, in its history, as a city, from the Latin civitas: not a simple agglomeration of houses and people, but a particular identity, etymologically close to "civilization", bearer of a culture characterized by originality, creativity, "style". This institutional role has always been a capital city, and it has become an identity especially since the 18th century: a city of encounter and continuous comparison of different languages and traditions, also thanks to the important Jewish contribution Gorizia builds a particular and complex cultural connotation.

It is precisely the cultural, historical and linguistic complexity of Gorizia and its province that has determined the "speciality" of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, providing an incalculable added value to the rest of the regional territory. But Gorizia is gradually losing the prerogatives of the capital of an area which, although drastically reduced after the Second World War, has maintained a historical and political value of considerable national and international value.

We think that in addition to its cultural opportunities, certainly to be seized and developed, Gorizia should interact culturally with Ljubljana, Zagreb, Budapest, Prague and of course Vienna, highlighting its Central European vocation, becoming promoter and leader of cultural projects of European scope, entering into operational synergy for example with the forthcoming creation of that Alpine Macroregion of which Gorizia could become an important junction, strong of its county tradition with a territory that united, in a sort of original Central European, Latin, Slavic and Germanic peoples and traditions from Istria to Tyrol, including the whole eastern arch of the Alps.

We think that Gorizia has a heavy cultural-historical deficit, especially compared to the neighbouring territories and towns. If the international discourse is fundamental for a revival of the city, we reiterate the need to recompose and nurture relations with nearby towns, such as Cormòns and Gradisca d'Isonzo, the cross-border municipalities already affected by the EGTC. Perhaps more important are the relations and links of Gorizia with Aquileia: of the immense historical, cultural and religious tradition of Aquileia, Gorizia is the direct heir after the division of the Patriarchate in the two archbishops of Gorizia and Udine by Maria Teresa in 1752. But this opportunity has never been understood or exploited. And to think that Aquileia and its Basilica fall under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Gorizia Curia, as did Cervignano. The restored museum of Santa Chiara should have housed the magnificent treasure of Aquileia owned by the Gorizia Curia, bringing back to our city the values and symbols of a spiritual and cultural power that goes from Lombardy to Transylvania. The underestimation of the historical role of Gorizia in its more than one thousand years of history is astonishing and deserves a particular deepening.

We think that this cultural deficit is at the basis of the progressive plundering of Gorizia's prerogatives and therefore of its role. We only remember the most recent or ongoing cases such as the cancellation of the Provveditorato, the Bank of Italy, the resizing of the hospital, the transfer of the Tavolare to Gradisca d'Isonzo, the transfer of the management of the Provincial Museums to the Region or to the special company Erpac, the always impending closure of the Court, the Confindustria that passes under Trieste and, even worse, the Chamber of Commerce that renounces its autonomy to pass in fact under the Julian capital. These are the signs that the decades-long process of spoliation of the city would have as an epilogue the downgrading of Gorizia from city to country. The paradox is that Gorizia is full of cultural associations, unfortunately often self-referential, unable to create positive synergies between them for the city. Like its institutions.

In addition, Gorizia has also suffered losses of the role that have passed through the media and politically "under the radar", but equally devastating for its role and economy: in the wine field, today so important in terms of tourism, it must strongly claim the role of capital not only of the Collio but also of the Isonzo and the Carso, all DOC wine-growing areas that meet geographically in Gorizia and constitute one of the city's particular excellences. We remind you that until the early 90s the Doc Collio and Isonzo were located in Gorizia. At a time when the tourist appeal of a city in general and the cultural appeal, in particular, is measured on the food and wine offer, the loss causes damage to Gorizia's image, which translates into a real loss of tourism and therefore of potential economic return. We just want to remind you, to understand the indifference with which Gorizia looks at a sector that could be real excellence of its own, that the Rosa di Gorizia trademark is registered at the Chamber of Commerce of Udine.

The causes of this progressive loss of functions, structures and roles are external and internal. The internal ones derive in large part from the fragmentation and quarrelsomeness of the various political components of the city, unable to unite on topics of general interest. But there are external causes, of various kinds: the rivalries with Trieste and Udine have ancient roots; the difficulty of relations between Gorizia and the municipalities of its province and the Destra Isonzo. Moreover, with the forthcoming suppression of the Provinces and the birth of new municipal aggregations, there is a real assault on those functions that have always been characteristic of Gorizia as the capital. The decadence of Gorizia, therefore, passes through a serious but correctable identity and therefore a cultural problem.

Figuratively, the range of action of the Committee can be summarized in three concentric circles: the first take into account the surroundings of the city and then touches Cormons, Aquileia, Gradisca, Nova Gorica, Palmanova, Cividale. The second is undoubtedly wider and goes from Klagenfurt to Lienz, Udine to Trieste, Pordenone to Slovenian and Croatian Istria: this is the area in which political-institutional action is needed. The third circle of more complex management but also more promising from the point of view of cultural revival is the one that can - and must - link Gorizia to the great European capitals, such as Vienna, Budapest, Zagreb, Belgrade. These three geographical gradations can give positive indications of the various phases of intervention and planning.


postponing the analysis of the situation to subsequent in-depth analysis, we believe it is imperative to set up a Committee of people of goodwill, who recognize themselves in these still generic premises and who have above all at heart the fate of Gorizia, with the goal of

  • to activate, through meetings, debates, round tables, all the social, institutional and political forces in defence of the historical prerogatives of the City of Gorizia;
  • to activate all possible editorial, media and public initiatives for the enhancement of the history and culture of Gorizia in all its vast and complex articulations;
  • to be an active engine of proposals, projects and ideas capable of relaunching the image of Gorizia in the Region in Italy in Europe;

The association Gorizia3.0 will deal personally with the issue of possible Isontine aggregations, focusing on a rassemblement of the municipalities of the Destra Isonzo and on an increasing integration with the neighbouring Slovenian municipalities;

The association intends to produce a series of proposals that will relaunch the role of Gorizia in the Region, in Italy in an international context with particular attention to the Central European area.
