Nico Di Stasio (1954-2007)
He graduated from the State Art Institute of Gorizia, then attended the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. At the end of 1995 Di Stasio, after many years of work and many, many paintings, decided to accept the invitation and set up his first personal exhibition firmly desired by the heads of the cultural association EXIT. The exhibition, a real event, is set up in the old and evocative location of the Cinema Vittoria (now the Kinemax multiplex) in Piazza della Vittoria in Gorizia, in his city, for his friends, for the Gorizians who flocked in large numbers. "Nico di Standrež. Pittore Astratto o Distraatto ?" is the title of the beautiful exhibition followed, some years later, by another personal exhibition, always at Kinemax, on the occasion of the screening of "I punchi in tasca" by Marco Belloccio.
In 1990 he took part in the collective exhibition "18x24", a small-format exhibition set up in the historic headquarters of EXIT in Via Favetti to which about thirty artists from the region belonged. Again at EXIT, he exhibited paintings of great strength on the occasion of the exhibition "Vervolgen den Blaue Reiter", a tribute to the expressionist masters of the "Blue Knight" group formed in Munich in the early 1900s. In 1998 he was among the artists of the last generation in the great exhibition organized by the Province of Gorizia entitled "Contemporanea/Sobodna Umetnost '98. Adventures along the border" and articulated in eleven sections hosted in various locations in the Isonzo area and in Nova Gorica. With Mario Di Iorio, Max Busan, Claudio Mrakic and Paolo Figar participates in Udine in the exhibition "PitturAree" organized by the Friulian Plastic Arts Centre. In 2000 Nico Di Stasio exhibited in the hall of the Ridotto of the Municipal Theatre of Cormons within "Altri racconti", a cycle of exhibitions curated by Franca Marri. He also received an important recognition with the invitation to participate in the exhibition "Figure del presente", a cycle of exhibitions promoted by the Regional Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art "Spazzapan" in Gradisca d'Isonzo From 2000 to 2005 he exhibited several times in the space/gallery of the Equilibri Bookshop (now unfortunately closed). In 2006 he won a prize at the exhibition organized in Ruda and received the compliments of Sergio Altieri and Francesco Altan, both on the jury. The same year Di Stasio is the protagonist of a peaceful "invasion" of some spaces in the historical centre of Cormons; in fact he exhibits, at the same time, at the Rebus Bookshop (now unfortunately closed), at "Il Cantuccio" tavern and at "Jazz&Wine - Le bar". There are numerous exhibitions in neighbouring Slovenia: in Sinij Vhr, at Pilonova Galerija in Ajdovščina, at the Kulturni Center "Valentin Natotnik" in Velenje, at the Art Gallery of the Idrija Museum, at the "Artes" Gallery in Nova Gorica. He painted two murals at Piedimonte del Calvario, created as part of the event organized and followed in the smallest details by the unforgettable Alba Gurtner. A few months after his death, the complex and important figure of Nico is remembered and honoured with a great exhibition at the Provincial Museums of Borgo Castello (Gorizia) and with the publication of an elegant and exhaustive monograph published by Transmedia s.p.a. The exhibition and the catalogue are realized thanks to the commitment and the work of a group of friends of the deceased artist (see chapter 2 of the first part of the pantry).
